Cheat Sheet for things you might forget:

  • Total Recall has 2 main operation modes with 2 options for external control, either triggers / clocks or CV.

  • To switch between Preset manager and Macro mode hold press the Sample button for 3 seconds, to switch between trigger vs cv control hold press the Sample button for 1 second.

  • Preset Manager mode with CV scan: one LED lights up at a time, showing the currently selected preset( LED is fully on for presets 1-4, semi lit for presets 5-8). Applying CV in the range of 0-5V to Meta input will scan through the presets.

  • Preset Manager with Meta trigger (strobe): the LED indication is similar to mode 1 above, but inverted. Applying trigger into Meta will switch to the next preset sequentially.

  • Macro CV generator with Meta CV min-max morphing: LED 4 is constantly fully lit indicating macro CV mode. With short MODE press we select CV channel 1-3 to define its min/max values with the knobs 2 and 1 respectively. Applying CV into META CV will morph between min. and max states.

  • Macro CV generator with meta TRIGGER (strobe): LEDs indication is similar as in mode 3, but LED 4 is now semi-lit. Applying a single trigger to META CV will jump from min. to max. like the flip-flop function. Depending on the SMOOTH switch the change will either be instant or slewed by 100ms.

Total Recall Manual

Total Recall

Total Recall is a 3 channel preset manager / multistage and macro controller for eurorack synthesisers in 6hp. It allows you to send 3 precise voltages per each of the 8 preset slots, scroll through them manually or via external CV / trigger sources. Macro mode lets you send 3 CVs with span controlled with a master macro knob. Additionally you can process external CVs and audio sources through internally controlled VCAs / Polarisers for new modulation shapes / tones or general utility purposes.

Overview

Total Recall is a module designed to be your friend both in the studio and on stage, for controlled performance applications as well as experimental sound design. There are 2 main modes, namely Preset Manager mode that lets you step through 8 presets containing 3 CV values and Macro mode, where you can smoothly morph between minimum and maximum voltage values for each of the CV outputs. Each mode can be externally controlled with either triggers / clocks or CV, hence, there are 4 modes in total.

The module has 3 CV inputs and 3 CV outputs. The outputs are used to create voltage offsets (presets) in the range of 0…+5V for unipolar setup and -5V….+5V for bipolar. Additionally you can slew the outputs with an onboard switch to create a smoother transition between voltage stages.

The inputs are used to process either CV or audio sources. Preset manager sets the attenuation / inversion of CV inputs per step and Macro mode acts as a continuous VCA / Polariser that can also be modulated at audio rates, producing extra harmonics similar to the sound of ring modulators.

Front panel controls

Sample button: Depending on the mode it either toggles the next preset (modes 1 and 2) or selects the channel (1-3) to set min./max. voltage (modes 3 and 4).

Meta CV / Trigger input: Depending on the MODE it either works as meta CV input (modes 1 and 3) to morph between the voltage states or as meta TRIGGER (a.k.a. STROBE) input (modes 2 and 4) to switch to the next state with trigger input.

Preset 1/2/3 knobs: define the voltage value in the selected state. Act as attenuator in uni-polar setting or attenuverter in bi-polar setting, if external CV is applied to the corresponding CV IN jack. In macro modes 3 and 4, knobs 2 and 1 define min. and max. states for the macro morphing — knob 3 acting as macro, morphing from min. (CCW) to max. (CW).

Preset 1/2/3 CV inputs:: If no patch cable is applied, that channel has fixed CV per preset. If a cable with CV is inserted, then the knob defines incoming signal attenuation (uni-polar setting) or attenuvertion (bi-polar setting).

Bipolar / Unipolar switch: Bi-polar (switch to the left/-5...+5V output) and Unipolar (switch right/0...+5V output) voltage setting. The voltages are stored separately in each setting.

Smooth switch: switch to the right enables fixed 100ms slew when switching between stored CV values (states) instead of instantly jumping from one value to another. In macro mode this enables smooth or instant morph between min./max. States.

Preset LEDs: depending on the MODE they show either selected preset (modes 1 and 2) or selecting the channel to adjust its min./max. levels (modes 3 and 4).

3 CV outputs: outputs for each of the 3 preset channels with full -5V….+5V range suitable for audio sources.

LED indicators for each preset: showing each output voltage: -5V = red; 0V = dimmed; +5V = blue.

Operation Modes:

Summary

Total Recall has 2 main operation modes: Preset Manager and Macro. Each mode has 2 options for external control with either CV or triggers / clocks. To switch the sub modes for CV / Trigger functionality hold-press the Sample button for 1 second. To switch between Preset Manager mode and Macro mode hold-press the Sample button for 3+ seconds.

Preset manager with meta CV scan over the presets:

One LED lights up at a time, showing the currently selected preset (LED is fully on for presets I-IV, semi lit for presets V-VIII). Applying CV (0...5V) into META CV will scan through the presets. Depending on the SMOOTH switch the morphing will either be instant or continuous.

Preset manager with meta TRIGGER (strobe):

LEDs indication is similar as in mode 1, but inverted. Applying trigger into META will switch to the next preset. Depending on the SMOOTH switch the change will either be instant or slewed by 100ms.

Macro CV generator with meta CV min - max morphing:

OLED 4 is constantly fully lit indicating macro CV mode. With short MODE press we select CV channel 1-3 to define its min/max values with the knobs 2 and 1 respectively. Applying CV into META CV will morph between min. and max states.

Macro CV generator with meta TRIGGER (strobe):

LEDs indication is similar as in mode 3, but LED 4 is now semi-lit. Applying a single trigger to META CV will jump from min. to max. like the flip-flop function. Depending on the SMOOTH switch the change will either be instant or slewed by 100ms.

Total Recall with external CV / Audio sources:

Summary

Apart from being a flexible CV generator, Total Recall can also process external CV / Audio in interesting ways depending on the currently selected mode.

Preset Manager mode:

with CV / Audio patched to each input, the presets will no longer output offsets, but will control the attenuation / attenuversion of each input and direct the resulting voltage to each respective output. This functionality only works if something is plugged to the CV input, otherwise each channel works as an offset generator. This way you can combine both modes for even higher flexibility.

Macro mode:

Since macro mode doesn’t have Preset Steps, you are able to make continuous transitions. To do this, turn the switch to Smooth position, set the min and max range values for each channel and plug either CV or Audio to one of the inputs. If the Polarity switch is set to Unipolar, the Macro knob will act as the master controller for each channel's VCA, letting you utilise Total Recall as a 3 channel VCA with adjustable min and max points. If the Polarity switch is set to Bipolar, you can use the Macro knob as the master controller for 3 Polarisers / Ring mods. This mode is particularly interesting as it lets you bend and twist your CV sources to create new shapes and since the Macro knob can be modulated at audio rates you can create new harmonics out of already existing audio sources.

Firmware Update:

Download the latest firmware here: https://www.endorphin.es/modules/p/total-recall

The update procedure is done via audio, either computer or phone will work, we advise you to disable all the notifications (flight mode) so that the update is not interrupted.

  • Power OFF you modular system.
  • Hold SAMPLE while powering again, you will see the preset I LED slowly blink.
  • Connect the headphone output of your computer to the META CV IN input of the module with a simple mono or stereo cable.
  • Press PLAY and wait 1+ minutes. All 4 preset LEDs will quickly blink and CV LEDs will be blue. The module will reboot automatically.
  • Don't play any other sounds on your computer during the update process. When all LEDs flash RED, the signal is too low or too high. Just reset the firmware update process by pressing SAMPLE once and regulate the signal level with RATE knob (full CCW: 1x amplification, full CW: 10x amplification).

Important Note: to prevent the errors during the audio playback of the firmware, please use any audio editor without any effects applied (EQ etc).
