Overview

Squawk Dirty To Me is a simple and effective 6hp stereo VCF with 8 different filter types, that can also be sequenced with external CV. High quality 96kHz 16 bit stereo processing along with zero-delay feedback DSP makes it the perfect tool for modern musicians and sound designers. Built in post filter VCA allows one to have a compact voice setup. Additional hi-pass filter cuts boomy low end and all pass filter delay on the right output let’s you widen your stereo image.

The following filter types are available: 24DB/OCT TRANSISTOR LADDER, MS-20 12DB/OCT, 12DB/OCT LOW PASS GATE, 12DB/OCT RESONANT LOW PASS GATE, 12DB/OCT DJ ISOLATOR BIPOLAR VARIABLE FILTER, 12DB/OCT HIGH PASS STATE VARIABLE FILTER, 12DB/OCT BAND PASS STATE VARIABLE FILTER, COMB FILTER / RESONATOR.

Front panel controls

Mode Button: pressing the MODE button shortly cycles thru all filter types. Long MODE press enables meta filter scanning. Extra long MODE press enables the all-pass mode.

VCA CV in: unattenuated CV input for VCA (post-filter): range 0...+5v .

High Pass Filter knob: manual control of the High Pass Filter and attenuator for CV for high-pass filter once the cable is inserted to HPF CV in. HPF is placed before the main multimode filter.

HPF CV in: cv control of the HPF, range 0…+5V.

VCA CV input: Unattenuated CV input for volume control with range 0….+5V.

Cutoff Knob: manual control of the Filter Cutoff, once the cable is inserted to the CV input it acts as attenuator.

Cutoff CV in: cv control of the Filter Cutoff, range 0…+5V.

Resonance knob: manual control of the emphasis (resonance peak) of the frequency, in some other cases it controls the bandwidth, vactrol’s decay etc. Acts as attenuator when a patch cable is inserted into the Resonance CV input.

Resonance CV input: cv control of the Resonance parameter, range 0…+5V.

Audio inputs: audio inputs for the filter, if nothing is plugged into input 2, input 1 is internally connected to input 2.

LEDs: 4 white LEDs show the currently selected filter type. When the LED is fully LIT, it shows one of I...IV chosen filter types. When the LED is semi LIT, it shows one of V...IV chosen filter types. Status LED in the middle is used to show the update process.

Audio outputs: final post filter audio outputs.

Filter Types

Squawk Dirty To Me features 8 different filter types.

1) 24 DB/OCT TRANSISTOR LADDER: zero-delay feedback low-pass filter modelled after the famous Minimoog filter.

2) MS-20 12 DB/OCT: zero-delay feedback OTA-low-pass filter. Be careful, this filter has very powerful and dirty resonance.

3) 12 DB/OCT LO-PASS GATE: non-resonant zero-delay feedback filter where instead of the resonance, we control the DECAY closing time of the virtual vactrol. While ‘pinging’ Cutoff CV with a short pulse of voltage and adjusting the decay will give us that distinct ‘Buchla Bongo’ sound.

4) 12 DB/OCT RESONANT LOW-PASS GATE: variation of the zero-delay feedback vactrol filter model III with fixed fast decay and full control over the resonance. The resonance of the sound is ringing, just as it may be expected from a typical LPG.

5) 12 DB/OCT DJ ISOLATOR-STYLE BIPOLAR FILTER: zero-delay feedback state-variable filter: Sound is unfiltered when the Cutoff knob is in the middle/noon position. It filters high frequencies/low-pass, when turning the knob CCW and filters low frequencies/hi-pass, when turning the knob CW from its middle position.

6) 12 DB/OCT HIGH-PASS STATE-VARIABLE FILTER: zero delay feedback, single hi-pass on full knob range.

7) 12 DB/OCT BAND-PASS STATE VARIABLE: zero-delay feedback filter with ‘cutoff’ knob you choose the band's centre point and with Resonance knob the width of the band.

8) COMB FILTER: It recreates a series of harmonically related amounts of notch filters. In static state, it sounds similar to a phaser, but with modulation applied to the frequency it comes closer to a flanger. With resonance set to full CW it becomes a resonator.

Special Operation Modes:

Summary

Apart from being able to use different filter types, there are 2 more modes of operation that expand this module’s functionality.

Meta Scanning:

Meta sequencing allows you to sequence the filter modes with external CV. Every filter type stores the position of Cutoff and Resonance, which lets you sequence the modes using pre configured sweet spots, resulting in a more musical and intentional workflow.

To activate Meta Scanning mode, press the Mode button for 1 second.

The Cutoff knob now acts as your manual offset for the filter type selector. The Cutoff cv input functions as attenuated input for the Filter Cutoff with 0…+5V range.

Resonance knob and Resonance CV input work as a pair for the external CV Meta Scanning. Plug a CV source to the Resonance CV input to scan the Filter Types and use the Resonance knob as your attenuator. The amount of polarised CV is added to the manual offset introduced by the Cutoff knob. Meta (Resonance) CV input accepts voltages in the range of 0…+5V.

All Access Pass:

All Access pass mode allows you to set a delay amount for OUT2, making the stereo image sound wider.

To activate this mode, hold press the Mode button for longer than 2.5 seconds and the status LED inside the triangle will light up fuchsia. The 4 LEDS will visualise the stereo spread. This will switch the functionality of the HPF knob to control the delay amount on OUT2. Full CCW knob position will set zero delay while full CW will increase OUT2 channel delay to up to 1/3 seconds. Small amounts of allpass delay will create a stereo widening effect. Experiment with the amount to your taste. The HPF cv input will continue to modulate the HPF.

Note: all changes in the All Access Pass settings are saved/stored and will be restored when the module is powered up the next time.

Firmware Update:

Download the latest firmware here: https://www.endorphin.es/modules/p/squawk-dirty-to-me

The update procedure is done via audio, either computer or phone will work, we advise you to disable all the notifications (flight mode) so that the update is not interrupted.

  • Power OFF you modular system.
  • Hold ‘mode’ while powering your system again, you will see the status LED will blink blue.
  • Connect the audio output from your computer headphones output to one of the audio inputs of the module with simple mono or stereo cable.
  • Press PLAY and wait 2+ minutes. Use and file player that does not apply audio compression to the file. During the update process you should observe that the BLUE light is blinking faster than usual. The module will reboot automatically after the new firmware has been installed.
  • Make sure you don't input any extra sounds during the update process (reminder signals from your calendar, etc.). When the status LED flashes RED – that means the signal is too low or too high – just reset the firmware acquire process by pressing MODE once. This can also happen when you first insert the cable into the audio input.

Important Note: to prevent the errors during the audio playback of the firmware, please use any audio editor without any effects applied (EQ etc).
